Darth Vader in Rogue One. This is a statement that now seems to have a high likelihood of being true. This statement is also extremely exciting. As I have said in previous posts, Darth Vader has become extremely interesting in the time since the new canon. He has gotten material that has broadened his character in many different ways. Some of the very best that the new canon has to offer, has explored this, namely Lords of The Sith(LOTS), Tarkin, and the Darth Vader Comic series. As a result of this material, and greater explanation of Anakin’s fall in the Clone Wars, he is now the character I am most excited to be seeing on screen. Yes, even more so than Han Solo in his spin off. Below are some characteristics of Vader I would like to see.
This is the Vader in his prime, at the time of Rogue one we are before EP IV. Vader is still executing smaller missions himself, and does not have a super star destroyer to command. A few short years earlier he went on a adventure with Tarkin, where they hunted down rebels across the galaxy in a small ship. Also more importantly this is also the time of LOTS and Rebels. And lets face it, Darth Vader does not sit back and direct the battle from a comfortable command post in these stories. In LOTS he boards a ship in space and kills the entire crew, then he murders an entire village and hundreds of creatures in an incredible battle scene. In rebels, where he showed up briefly, he managed to destroy a whole rebel fleet single-handedly. This a a Vader that still works on the front lines and enjoys it, just as Anakin Skywalker did. I really hope that in Rogue one Vader does something more spectacular than kill his own officers.
Something I also hope to see is a a loyalty and friendship with the emperor. I don’t know if we will be seeing the emperor in rogue one, but I hope we do if only for a moment. In this era of Star Wars there is strong evidence for a close relationship between Palpatine and Vader. At this time in the canon, Vader is probably closer to being the “My friend” of the emperor rather than the “Together we can kill the emperor and rule as father and son!” Vader has not fallen out of favor and plotting revenge like he is in the Vader Comics. In this era as shown in LOTS and Tarkin, Vader and Palpatine have the ideal master-apprentice relationship. Vader shows loyalty and the emperor shows strength.
3. Emotional Conflict
This is something that the new canon is doing a splendid job of, and what I want to see more than anything. While the stories we are getting are making Vader more evil and barbaric, they are also establishing his humanity and feelings in a way that the films only touched on at the very end. My favorite examples come from LOTS, In this book we see Vader reminiscing for a moment on his past, similar to Kylo Ren in the Force Awakens. Then, he snaps out of it when the emperor calls him on it, but we get just a flicker of light. Also, later on in the book we see Vader possibly having compassion on a young girl the emperor is about to kill. Never mind he later slaughters the entire village at the behest of the emperor (details, details), we nerveless get another flash of light from him. Finally, the scene from rebels above. The finale also promises to give us a wonderful moment between master and former padawan. I am very excited to see what they are going to go with his story in rogue one, and in the New canon in general.
These are the things I am hoping to see from Darth Vader in Rogue One. What are you hoping to see? let us know in the Comments below.
